Businesses Go Green and Save Money

It’s easy to understand how some companies may be cutting back on their “green” practices and proposals during a time of recession and reduced sales.

The surprising news however, is that most small businesses have continued with their environmental programs. According to a survey by CFIB, 81% of small business owners are motivated by personal views, to continue with their “green” initiatives. Protecting the environment for future generations is important.

Of course, it’s always nice, if helping the environment, also helps the companies bottom Line. Low hanging fruit includes:

  • printing on both sides of a page
  • switching to low energy lighting
  • turning down the heat
  • sealing drafts
  • adding insulation
  • turning off office equipment – power bars
  • turning down the hot water heater
  • using reduced water flow devices
  • using video conferencing  (Skype)

It’s worth looking around for tax incentives and grants, as well. These are being offered by several levels of government and some industries (electrical, natural gas).

Companies that continue to enhance their environmental responsibilities, also encourage employee and customer loyalties.
