The ruling Conservative leader Stephen Harper and NDP chief Jack Layton, backed down today from their refusal to debate with Green party leader Elizabeth May, in the upcoming televised debates.

Harper said he’s still opposed to May’s inclusion but won’t boycott the debates.

Now that only one leader opposes her participating in the televised debates, May said there’s no reason to exclude her. “I think it’s enormously encouraging for the functioning of our democracy and for the upcoming election campaign,” she said Wednesday.

A recent poll suggested 66 per cent of respondents feel May should have her chance to speak. The Green party has placed candidates in 306 of the 308 ridings in the country and has one crossover member in parliament.

It’s nice to see public pressure still works, even if it’s only at election time!
