Carbon Tax -It’s About Time!

In Canada, introducing a tax on carbon has finally been suggested by the opposition party. Unfortunately, all the press is concerned with, is the “cost” of this revenue neutral proposal for very specific, high carbon producing items such as electricity. Very little ink has been used to talk about the “cost” of the carbon!

For example, the cost of electricity in Ontario will increase due to the 5 coal fired generating plants they use. Very little ink is given to the fact that just one of these coal fired generating stations, Nanticoke, produces as much greenhouse gas each year, as half of the vehicles in Canada. Closing ONE coal fired generating station could reduce the GHG’s equivalent to removing HALF of the cars in the whole country!

We can not continue to use the air we breath as a FREE GARBAGE DUMP for billions of tons of GHG and SMOG/Pollution. Just as there is a cost to business to haul byproducts of production to a physical dump, there must be a cost to business, to “dump” waste material into our air. With a CARBON TAX, it would finally make economic sense to close NANTICOKE, rather than allow it to poison our air and our world each day.
