Cradle to Cradle (C2C) means using environmentally safe and healthy materials; design for material re-utilization, such as recycling or composting; the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency; efficient use of water, and maximum water quality associated with production; and instituting strategies for social responsibility.
Most of our existing products were designed in the age of industrialization, to be cheap and easy to produce and with pretty packaging to entice a purchase. Times are changing and smart companies are changing with them. Though we all love to hate McDonald’s, this company responds to customer feedback. When the customer told them loud and clear, they did not like McDonald’s packaging, they quickly switch to all paper based packaging.
As many companies will continue to produce products in the cheapest manor regardless of what is best for the environment, governments are finally getting involved. In some areas the cost of Blue Box Recycle programs are being shifted to the manufacturer. If you produce a product with excessive waste, your share of the Blue Box program will be larger.
But the pressure truly needs to be applied by you and me, the consumer. Make your desire for less packaging know. Buy products from companies certified as Cradle to Cradle.
