Earth Hour 2008
Earth Hour 2008 - March 29, 8PM
Earth Hour - What is it?
Created to take a stand against the greatest threat our planet has ever faced, Earth Hour uses the simple action of turning off the lights for one hour to deliver a powerful message about the need for action on global warming.
This simple act has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world. As a result, at 8pm March 29, 2008 millions of people in some of the world’s major capital cities, including Copenhagen, Toronto, Chicago, Melbourne, Brisbane and Tel Aviv will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.
What Can I Do?
Visit www.earthhour.org and sign up, then on March 29th at 8pm turn out the lights. Even better, spread the word to your neighbours and friends. Make sure everyone understands WHY they are turning out the lights!
Earth Hour - will it make a difference?
Turning the lights off for an hour helps to raise the awareness of the crisis we are in. When more and more people know of the issues of climate change and over consumption, hopefully we’re be able to implement real changes. We need real people, pushing their local governments, to implement meaningful rules and regulations with real bite!
Personally, you can help by not only turning the lights off for this one hour, but making small changes to your everyday routines. Make sure the lights (and electronics) are turned off whenever you leave a room. Swap out those old incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFL). If you have a choice, buy your electricity from a green provider, or make some of your own with solar P.V. or a small wind turbine. Reduce, reuse and recycle, with emphasis on REDUCE.
Smalls steps when taken alone, but huge when everyone becomes involved.
