Evacuated Tube Solar Collector Half Price
Integrated Tank for Northern Climates
While evacuated tube or flat plate, solar collectors with an integrated tank, have been in use in hot climates for years, their use where temperatures dip below freezing is rather new. Some manufacturers have introduced an integrated tank solar collector to Canada, with a super insulated tank and heating wire for the insulated outside plumbing. One company, Globe Solar Energy, is approved under the government run ecoAction program.
Advantages of an Integrated Tank Solar Collector
With the tank located on top of the collectors, there is no need for a very expensive external heat exchanger tank, pump, and solar controller. The unit contains a simple temperature controller that turns on/off a heating wire that runs with the outside (insulated) plumbing. This makes a huge difference in cost for both the materials and installation.
Installed price for a household system was recently quoted as $3600. We were actually quoted $3600 minus a show special of $360 for a price of $3,240. All prices are in Canadian dollars (Toronto Green Living Show). If you include the additional $1000 rebate that is available for people from Ontario via the ecoAction program, the complete system cost less than just the INSTALLATION cost of many other evacuated tube or flat plate solar thermal systems.
