Freecycle – Keep It Out of the Landfill
Freecycle – keeping good items out of the landfill. The idea is very simple – have something you no longer need? Give it away for free, to someone who needs it. And with the use of the internet and Yahoo Groups, the whole exchange has become very simple to follow.
How to Free Cycle:
- Join Your Local Yahoo Group – by City/Region
From the Freecycle Home Page enter your city name in the search box. There are over 4,000 groups/cities to choose from. Join the closes group that appears in the list. You’ll need to create a Yahoo! ID if you don’t already have one. - Choose Your Notification Options
How often do you want to be told about stuff that’s available, or taken? I’d start with the daily digest option which only sends out one email per day. You can always change this option later. - Read/Post Items
All messages fall into 4 categories: OFFER, TAKEN, WANTED, and PROMISED. - Pickup
The person receiving the free stuff usually picks it up. Of course you can make other arrangements. - Follow the Rules
No spamming. No pets. No trades. Every item must be FREE.

In the UK, over 200 former Freecycle groups have become Freegle groups. Breaking the affiliation with the original USA network. Freegle has a membership of almost 1 million users spread across the UK. ALL FREEGLE groups are run by local, experienced moderators that actually live in the area that the group covers, so the groups are individually adapted to nuances of their local area. An awful lot of Freecycle groups in the UK are run by cyber-non-persons from the USA and fail to provide a grass roots locally run group. To find your local Freegle group go here:

all are run on Yahoo Groups platform and have on-hand moderators to help you learn the ropes of re-using stuff and reducing landfill easily by free giving
