Green Energy and Green Economy Act – great ideas
The Green Energy and Green Economy Act (GEA) proposed by Ontario on Feb 23rd, could move that province to the lead within North America, in rolling out conservation and green energy projects. The GEA act proposes to:
-
create 50,000 jobs over the next 3 years
-
create a feed-in tariff for renewable energy
-
establish a “right to connect” to the electrical grid
-
streamline approvals for green energy projects
-
stop NIMBY from impacting on projects
-
set high standards for all new appliances – electrical and water usage
-
require mandatory home energy audits prior to sale of homes
-
improve the building code – LEED Silver as the new standard
-
“Green” provincial and public sector buildings
Of course, the fine details, yet to be implemented, can still make or break this bill. But our hats are off to the Ontario government for their thinking…. if they will just cancel any new nuclear generating stations, we’d be all for them!
