No way. We're not far enough in the technological race to start relying on alternative fuels and still keep this economy running. We need a combination of hybrid gas/electric vehicles to maximize output of the oil/gas we DO buy, and we need more refineries and domestic drilling to increase supply, therby bringing our dependence on FOREIGN oil(not oil in general) to an end, and put us in the pole position to really invest and explore alternative energy sources. Ethanol is NOT viable and never has been. We need our energy to be reliable, sustainable, and plentiful. At this juncture, oil and coal(especially diesel made from coal) is the most efficient way. We should've drilled into ANWR while Clinton was in office.
