Home Wind Turbines
Several companies now make small home sized wind turbines for the residential market. New start-up companies from China have recently flooded the market which is helping to drive down prices. It’s very difficult to judge quality just on external appearances alone, so it’s buyer beware in this market.
Before you throw down your hard earned green on a new home wind turbine, here’s some items to keep in mind.
Conserve First - always cheaper to reduce a kilowatt of power, rather than make one.
Your Power Consumption - look at your electrical bill. Know how many kilowatt hours of power you use in a month.
Know your Average Wind Speed - easy numbers to pick off a wind map. With this number (5.5 m/s for London), check the power output on the power graph for the wind turbine you might purchase. If it doesn’t have a power graph or performance chart, DON’T purchase it.
VAWT vs HAWT - If you have the space and access to smooth wind, a horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) will produce more power per dollar you spend. In an Urban setting, with rough, gusty wind, a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) may be your only option.
