Lawn & Garden Pest Control – Naturally
A normal, healthy lawn should not need pesticides (insecticides, herbicides & fungicides). To keep your lawn healthy, enrich the soil with compost, spread grass seed in the spring and fall, keep grass at a healthy height and water deeply but less often.
What to do if you think you have an insect problem:
- identify the insect – grub, chinch bug, aphid or helpful lady bug?
- visit your lawn and garden store for a “natural” solution.
- continue to use proper watering, mulching and seeding to control the pests.
If natural products don’t work, consult a lawn & garden care specialist. They may have another “healthy” alternative.
Problems with possible solutions:
- Weeds in lawn or garden - use corn gluten meal
- Weeds in sidewalk, patio, driveway – acetic acid (horticultural vinegar), herbicidal soap
- Grubs – nematodes
- Aphids – insecticidal soap, pyrethrum
- Black spot, powdery mildew – sulphur
- Ants, earwigs, cockroaches – silicon dioxide/diatpmaceous earth, borax
- Scale – horticultural oil
- Caterpillars – bacillus thuringiensis
- Slugs – silicon dioxide/diatpmaceous earth, ferric phosphate
