Michelin Markets In-Wheel Electric Motor

Michelin Active Wheel
Though not the first company to market an In-Wheel Electric Motor, Mitsubishi announced their MIEV (Mitsubishi In-wheel motor Electric Vehicle) or MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) back in early 2005, this is still a very important step forward.
While announcing their new wheel, Michelin also announced two vehicles which will use their new system, Venturi Volage – a concept sports car and Heuliez Will, a standard production vehicle.
With the motor in the wheel and also using an electronic suspension in the wheel, you eliminate the need for a motor under the hood, a transmission, suspension system, and exhaust system. This removes a lot of weight and allows the designer to radically change the look of a car. Yes, some of the weight will be replaced by batteries, but this technology is advancing rapidly.
With the In-wheel Motor issues already resolved, hopefully a rash of new models will be announced by several existing AND NEW car manufacturers.

Hello Bruce,
I am not sure, but you wrote Mitsubishi instead of Michelin, or is Japan producing a similar model of the french manufacturer?
Hi Pericles,
Yes, Mitsubishi has had an In-Wheel EV around since 2005. What I like about the Michelin announcement is the fact it’s not linked to one car manufacturer. I’m hopeful that new companies may pickup on this product to develop their own EV.
