[...] Here are 3 of the best money saving tips to reduce your air conditioning costs and in my experience as a heating and air conditioning professional matter the most because they don’t need to be performed manually by a person like turning down your thermostat or turning off lights. Install a Variable Speed Furnace: Blower motors use 70% of the energy used in an HVAC system. When your thermostat calls for air, the blower motor is the first piece of equipment to start running and after the desired temperature is reached your Air Conditioner turns off BUT your blower motor keeps on running until the end of the sequence which in turn uses a lot of energy. Variable speed motors run at slower speeds throughout the air conditioning sequence and use less energy and thus reducing your air conditioning energy bills. Install a Two-Stage High Efficiency Air Conditioner: Since this article was written in 2008 air conditioning units have come a long way in energy effiency. Today’s air conditioners boast a 20 Seer rating with 2 stage scroll compressors such as this one from Bryant http://www.bryant.com/products/acheatpumps/ac/evolution.shtml . You can save around 30% off of your electric bill by installing a high efficiency 2-Stage air conditioning unit. Home Insulation: Make sure that your attic and basement are properly insulated. Properly insulating your home could save an enormous amount of money annually depending on your specific (current) situation. Here are some other great tips on reducing your energy bill http://greenterrafirma.com/wordpress/tips-to-reduce-your-air-conditioning/ [...]

One big tip that I thought is very inportant but left out was a programmable thermostat. By having a programmable thermostat you get a couple different ways that it helps. First, you get a much more accurate reading on the temperature in the house as well the temperature you are trying to keep the house. Second, you get to program the thermostat to come on and off in the day and night when you are not home or sleeping. There are normally four settings on the thermostat for morning ,day, evening, and night. This is good because you can set the thermostat to a higher temperature during the day when you are out. Then set the thermostat to a more comfortable temperature for when you come home. Then when you go to bed you can set the temp a little more up for sleeping. Thanks, great post as well.
