Urban Farming on the Rise
Urban Farming on the Rise
Urban farming appears to be experiencing a resurgence. From my personal experience, when I first moved into my neighbourhood, 16 years ago, there were community garden plots only two blocks away. Marginal land, not used for farming or parks, was divided into many small plots, peppered with a variety of vegetables. Long ago, those plots were turned into a Home Depot parking lot.
Recently, the demand for small plots, available to residents of local apartment buildings, has reappeared. Unfortunately, in my city, new by-laws also came into force, that greatly limit the availability of urban farming.
A small garden growing just outside your back door is ideal. But what do you do, if this is not possible?
Vertical gardens – grow your herbs and vegetables along a vertical wall. Large pots also work well for that “very small” garden. And don’t forget a small planter filled with mixed herbs…. select the herbs that you like to cook with and move the planter indoors, well before the first frost.
Do you have more garden than you need? Plant an extra row or two and take the produce to your city’s food bank. While food banks require dry and canned goods in order to survive, fresh garden produce is always appreciated.
