Where to take old Electrical and Electronic Equipment
Where to take old Electrical and Electronic Equipment
On Wednesday, April 1st, I purchased a new computer (for my brother). The dying computer was likely 9 years old and has been on it’s last days, for a few years now. Finally, the hard drive has decided to RIP.
When paying at the cash register, the store owner referred us to a sheet of paper listing new fees that came into effect, that day (lucky us). The fees, $13.44 for the CPU box, $12.03 for the LCD monitor and $0.32 each for mouse and keyboard, cover the cost of recovery and recycling these goods when their life is over.
This program, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, though new to our area, has been implemented in several cities, states and countries around the globe. The idea, is to keep old consumer electronics out of the landfill sites. In our case, a fee is paid by the consumer upon purchase and the return depot accepts the old products for free (they are paid through the program). I personally believe that a portion of the fee should be returned to the consumer upon drop-off of the old equipment as some people will continue to throw the old electronics into their household garbage.
Bottom line to the consumer…. with many more return depots, it’s now much easier to do the the right thing and drop off your old electronics for recycling. So where can you take old electronics for drop-off?
